Carnal? Or Lost?

“CARNAL? OR LOST?”

Ephesians 3.20

I want to provoke you to think about something many people rarely or have never thought about. How many of the individuals who claim to have been saved really are born again? But, more than that, what beliefs will lost people, who claim to be Christians and who think they are Christians, foster in an attempt to convince themselves and others that they are genuine Christians?

I want you to consider that relatively few people really do know the Lord Jesus Christ in a personal and saving way. Do you remember how many of the total population on this earth were saved at the time of the Flood?

We can only guess the earth’s total population. But only those who were saved were spared God’s wrath and judgment. That means, of all the people alive at the time, only eight human beings, Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives, were right with God and were delivered from God’s wrath in the ark. Eight out of millions of people on the earth.

Realize that during the Exodus of the Jewish people from Egyptian slavery, there could not have been more than a handful of Gentiles throughout the planet who were right with God. Therefore, let’s focus on the children of Israel. Out of the total population of that nation that numbered some 2 to 3 million people, how many did God allow to die in the wilderness?

Except for those under the age of 20, the only ones who were allowed to enter the Promised Land because they did not rebel against God were Joshua and Caleb. Two out of one to two million people! That means we might have two individuals out of one to two million adults who demonstrated their relationship and faith in God by obedience.

Centuries later, when Elijah poured out his heart to God, lamenting that he of all the Israelites had not bowed the knee to the false god Baal, what did God tell him? God said to him that there remained 7000 who had not bowed the knee to Baal.[1] Of course, 7000 is far better than one, but if the nation numbered only seven million, that’s still only one-tenth of one percent of the population!

What about during the ministries of John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus Christ? Although they both stirred up a great deal of interest, would John the Baptist have been beheaded, and would the Lord Jesus Christ have been crucified if even a significant minority of the population were committed followers? Almost certainly not.

My point is this: Throughout history, during Bible times, and quite obviously during Church history since the first century after Christ, God’s people have always been and will always be a tiny minority of the total population, a remnant.[2] Never mind that large numbers of people claim to be Christians. Since the Roman emperor Constantine, it has been quite profitable for unsaved men and women to claim to be Christians for illegitimate reasons.

You can tell that this is true. When the number of genuinely saved people in any region or country becomes significant or dramatically affects the larger population of pagans, or only nominal Christians, persecution or opposition is always the result. Would genuinely saved people really oppose small groups of energetic Christians who were aggressively evangelistic and committed to Bible truth?

Not likely. The Catholic and then the Protestant majorities in Europe so strongly opposed real Christians down through the centuries, calling us fanatics and heretics, because the truly born again Christians lived lives and held to doctrines that showed the so-called Christian majority to not be Christians at all.

This kind of spiritual conflict has gone on for some 1800 years. And even though the struggle is significantly more subtle and beneath the surface in Western countries these days, nothing has changed. The great majority of people, even the great majority of so-called Christians, are not genuine believers in Christ. To justify their counterfeit Christian lifestyles, they have done two things:

First, they have demonized folks like you and me as fanatics, on the fringe of Christianity, and as the Christian version of such nut cases as the Ayatollah Khomeini and subsequent fundamentalist Muslims, or domestic nut cases like David Koresh and his Branch Davidians. The liberal press may have attached the name tags to us, but you don’t see any evangelical Christians coming to our defense against this slanted attack. Do you? And you won’t.

Next, and this is far more dangerous than any attack upon us from what we perceive to be outside the family of God, the so-called Christians have significantly altered and influenced popular theology. The so-called Christians have seen that God’s Word is reinterpreted and misinterpreted enough so that the lifestyles they live can still be termed Christian.

Is there evidence to support what I’m saying? Sure. Let’s resort to the Word of God and deal with a few of the more obvious errors. John 10.27-29. Many so-called Christians today are adamant in asserting that Christians can somehow lose their salvation once they have been saved. But what did Jesus say?

27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

How many other passages do I need to read? Will any part of the Bible conflict with what the Lord Jesus stated with clarity? No. Christians cannot lose their salvation, and real Christians know that. This is because we hear His voice and follow Him. Amen?

Here’s another one. Romans 8.9. Many so-called Christians claim that a person can trust Christ and be saved, but insist believers do not actually receive the Holy Spirit into their lives until sometime after their conversion. Thus, they believe, a second work of grace is required to get all that God has. But what does the Bible teach us? Paul wrote,

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

Real Christians believe what God’s Word says and know, by faith, that since Paul’s writing of his letter to the Romans, the child of God receives the Holy Spirit at the very instant that he trusts Christ as his Savior.

But there’s another odious doctrine that is far more widespread among the so-called Christian community than the ridiculous notion you can lose your salvation or the gross ignorance regarding the indwelling and sealing of the Holy Spirit at the instant of conversion. It’s the dangerous and sinister belief that most Christians are not spiritual, but are carnal, and that only a minor percentage of genuinely saved people are Spirit-filled people.

Jeremiah 17.9 declares that “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” It is well within reach of religious but lost people to be self-deceived into thinking the best about themselves and to convince themselves that they are saved when they are actually lost. How do they do this? Sometimes by self-deception. Sometimes, misinterpreting Scripture portions that quite obviously mean the opposite of what they suggest them to mean.

Let me read some passages to you:

Ephesians 5.3-5:

3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Galatians 5.19-21:

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

First Corinthians 6.9-10:

9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Romans 6.11-18:

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 8.5-6:

5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Seducing spirits have done an excellent job of convincing religious but lost people that one can believe in Christ while living like the devil. However, the Bible does not support that nonsense. When you are saved from your sins, God begins working in your life, and you start living differently than unsaved people do, even differently than unsaved so-called Christians live.[3]

This does not mean believers are sinlessly perfect. Far from it. But it does mean that genuinely converted to Christ Christians are spiritually-minded people who live for Christ, who love God, who consort with other Christians, and who are abandoning the wickedness God saved them from.

In short, pretenders have a view of the Christian life and an approach to Scripture that reflects the demonic doctrine that Jesus Christ saves people in their sins. [1] When God said, “Be ye holy, for I am holy,” He sent His Son Jesus Christ to make that a reality in our lives. But Jesus Christ does not save people in their sins! He saves people from their sins.[4]

A Christianity that does not feature God mightily working in you isn’t genuine Christianity at all. My text for this message, Ephesians 3.20, assumes that God’s power is working in us who are believers in Christ:

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,”

In Second Corinthians 5.17 Paul wrote,

“Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

The verse just read does not refer to someone changing his lifestyle. It’s not referring to self-reformation. It’s not referring to turning over a new leaf.

Lots of drunkards stop drinking. Druggies stop doing drugs all the time. Whoremongers like Joe Namath and Ben Roethlisberger settle down and become faithful to one woman when they get a little older all the time. Thieves stop stealing as they get older all the time. Aimless misfits stumble into job opportunities and become upstanding citizens all the time. But not one of these examples I’ve mentioned illustrates what happens when a sinner comes to Jesus Christ by faith, trusts Him to the saving of his or her wretched and sinful soul, and becomes a new creature in Christ.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century and the rising popularity of the Scofield Reference Bible, there have been widely circulated a view of the Christian life that is quite simply not Biblical. It is the view that most Christians are saved but live minimal and relatively meaningless lives.

It is granted by them that some Christians will catch fire for the Lord and really dedicate their lives, but they believe most will be proverbial pew warmers who only occasionally tithe, who make one or two visits on lost people in their entire lifetimes, and who probably never play a significant role in anyone turning to Christ. That was the notion of your average, typical 20th century Christian.

If you buy into popular Christianity, it is also the view of the Christian life that has ushered in the 21st century. Most who profess to be Christians seem to be carnal. Not temporarily carnal, but perpetually carnal. And only those very few Christians who are really dedicated are said to be spiritual.

My, but isn’t that an easy out for those who never really live for God but who attend Church just often enough and are just religious enough to convince themselves that they are saved? That is the dominant view of the Christian life that prevails in our modern era.

I do not subscribe to the notion that Christians are generally carnal and only a select few are spiritual. I believe the Bible shows that Christians are primarily spiritual and that carnality, while something every believer must deal with, is an anomaly that occurs occasionally and only lasts temporarily. In short, I believe, and the Bible indeed teaches, that when someone turns to Christ, incredible life of victory and spiritual conquest begins, power and grace for living is appropriated, and an everyday life that would pass in the midst of unsaved people as ordinary and common cannot be lived.

For the next few minutes, allow me to contrast for you the popular Christian life and the proper Christian life. Let me describe for you, first, what popularly passes for Christianity, and then I will describe for you what the Bible shows the Christian life to be like properly.

Sit up and listen carefully because, one way or the other, you are going to hear yourself described:

First, THERE IS WHAT I WILL CALL THE POPULAR CHRISTIAN LIFE

This is a picture of the so-called Christian life that virtually everyone who says he is a Christian would identify with in modern times. There are four areas of the Christian life that are very important. Let me describe these areas from the popular point of view:

First, “conviction.” The Lord Jesus Christ taught that the Holy Spirit would “reprove” or “convince” or “convict” the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment to come. We find this asserted in John 16.8. Two parallel passages, John 6.44 and John 12.32, indicate that the Father will draw sinners and the Son will draw sinners. So, it appears that the Father and the Son both make use of the ministry of the Holy Spirit of God to work in the life of the unsaved individual to persuade them to turn to Christ. The question is, just what happens when someone is “convicted” by the Holy Spirit? What happens to them? What kind of truth are they confronted with? What kind of message is preached? I think we would all agree that the typical popular Christianity view of conviction is evidenced by the fact that most popular Christians “decided to accept Jesus as their Savior.” That is, conviction is seen by most Christians as a mildly challenging and moderately uncomfortable process, resulting in the sinner becoming aware that they had some choices in life that needed to be made. Of course, the popular choice would be to accept Jesus.

This brings us to “conversion.” The popular notion about conversion, which is a Bible term rarely used in contemporary Christianity, is that it takes place when the unsaved person realizes they shouldn’t continue to live life the way he’s been living it and decides to accept Jesus as his personal Savior. The popular notion of conversion and becoming a Christian portrays Christianity as something you put on over what you already are, like putting a sweatshirt on over a T-shirt. That’s why you will see so-called Christians who work at jobs selling liquor, participating in the gambling industry by selling or buying lotto tickets, working under the table to cheat on taxes, trafficking in pornography, and so forth. Popular Christians go to the beach just like lost people, dress in grossly immodest fashion just like lost people, go to nightclubs or so-called Christian nightclubs just like lost people, listen to the same music lost people listen to. One even finds so-called Christian teens imitating, not the Apostle Paul as the Scriptures teach, but gang bangers, thugs, hoodlums, and other assorted types of street trash. What is conversion if, after conversion, you end up being essentially the same person you were before conversion?

The popular Christian was “convicted’ and then “converted.” What about now? What about his life as a Christian? What is the popular view of “carnality?” The popular idea of carnality is that being carnal is the normal state of most Christians. That is, most Christians go places they have no business going, reading things they have no business reading, and watching stuff that’s right out of the spiritual sewer. This can be proven by the reaction from Christians when you do something they don’t expect you to do or don’t want you to do because it’s God’s will.

I remember the reaction of folks in Brawley when I resigned from my pastorate to come here to Calvary Road Baptist Church. They were furious. They felt betrayed. They felt rejected. And the concept of God calling me to another Church was foreign to them. Why? Because actually surrendering to the will of God was something many had never conceived of on a practical everyday level of life. Spiritual people obey God’s Word and do God’s will. But amongst popular Christians, the will of God has so little to do with anything that two kinds of behavior are very common: First, getting mad or put out when someone actually does God’s will if it in any way inconveniences you or causes you to alter your plans. Second, justifying sinful behavior that is obviously at odds with Scripture by claiming that it is God’s will for your life. One final comment before we move on. One tragic consequence of popular Christianity is the false notion that since so many Christians are carnal and so, few are really spiritual, being spiritual is somehow mysterious, and those who are spiritual are somehow superior.

Then, there is the popular notion of “conformity.” In popular Christianity, conformity to Jesus Christ is a notion that few people pay much attention to. Oh, feeling good and being involved in so-called worship is very important. But the godly disciplines and the spiritual virtues that accompany Christian maturity and conformity to the image of Christ are almost completely discounted. Why? In popular Christianity, the key to solving every problem is attending a seminar on this, or a study group on that, or a video series on the other thing. There’s nothing wrong with getting away and having fellowship with other Christians, and being taught and challenged to live for Christ. But when people start thinking that it’s possible to disciple your children without having self-discipline in your life, or when they think you can effectively love your spouse without becoming a more mature and more godly Christian ... when they think that attending a seminar is the solution to all of life’s problems, conformity to Christ has suffered.

Now, LET ME QUICKLY SHOW YOU WHAT I CALL THE PROPER CHRISTIAN LIFE

I am convinced that the underlying reason for the popular Christian lifestyle that I have tried to describe for you is the lack of a genuine conversion experience, the lack of a real salvation experience. For a variety of reasons, the sinner has not trusted the Bible Jesus the Bible way, and it shows by the kind of life they live. By way of contrast, let me now show you what happens when someone is convicted, is really converted, is really conformed to Christ, and knows what carnality is.

First, conviction. There are several things that are wrong with the modern and unbiblical view of conviction. First, there is the wrong notion about conviction and time. No one doubts that conviction is a process that takes place over time, while conversion is an event that is transacted instantaneously. But how long does genuine Holy Spirit-produced conviction take? Most popular Christians don’t even think about this issue. But the conduct of their evangelistic efforts suggests that they expect conviction to be something that the Holy Spirit accomplishes very quickly in a sinner’s life. But is that true? Does conviction always happen quickly? Does the Holy Spirit always convince and persuade rapidly? To be sure, He most certainly can. But does the Bible suggest that He routinely does do so? I submit to you that on the Day of Pentecost, and with the conversion of Saul of Tarsus, and in the life of Simon Peter, and considering numerous other indications, evidence points to conviction being a process the Holy Spirit engages in over time, and is more likely measured in hours or days or weeks, than minutes.

Second, there is a wrong notion about conviction and the intellect, or conviction and urgency, or conviction and human will. Examine the men in the Bible who were quite obviously convicted by the Holy Spirit of God. On the Day of Pentecost, listen to Acts 2.37:

“Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

At the conclusion of Stephen’s sermon, listen to Acts 7.54-58:

54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

Now, in Acts 16.29-30, listen to the words of the Philippian jailor, convicted by the Holy Spirit of God:

29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

Conviction is not merely an intellectual enterprise undertaken by the Spirit of God. When the Holy Spirit of God moves against you to reveal your despicable sinfulness to you in the sight of God, the wretchedness of your soul, your moral putrefaction before a holy God, it produces a reaction in your heart and soul, not just in your mind. The result is you are pricked in your heart. And notice the result. You are either anxious for the relief that can only come from the forgiveness of your sins and the salvation of your soul, or you break out in open and flagrant rebellion to stop the conviction by silencing the servant God is using to convict you. One of the reasons so few are genuinely saved these days is because so many preachers don’t want to offend anyone. They don’t want anyone to be uncomfortable in Church. And parents don’t want their Little Lord Fauntleroy distraught. But when the Holy Spirit is at work convicting sinners, the result will be men and women and youngsters suffering the agony of their soul’s lost condition in the sight of God. And there’s no way anyone should be made to feel either good or comfortable about that.

Second, conversion. Acts 3.19 reads,

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.”

Conversion is not something that you do. Rather, it is something God does to you. And you must be converted to have your sins blotted out. Notice what must happen in the life of a sinner for God to convert him and blot out his sins. He must “repent.” The word “repent” is greatly misunderstood because of the Roman Catholic influence on modern-day Christianity.

Most people think of “repentance” as something akin to penance, doing good deeds as a way of showing how sorry you are for your sins. But that is not what the word “repentance” refers to at all. The term “repent” simply and straightforwardly refers to a change of mind and heart, a turning away from sin. When a sinner is truly convicted of sin, he becomes sickened by sin, he becomes terrified of the consequences of sin, and he becomes painfully aware of the fact that he has sinned against a holy and awesome God Who is outraged by such rebellion and arrogance. As a result of the conviction, then, the sinner rightly turns away from sin to the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, and trusts Him for the forgiveness of sins. How do we know that repenting results in being saved? Because, in Acts 2.37, when the convicted sinners in Jerusalem asked, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Peter said, “Repent.” And when the Philippian jailor asked Paul and Silas, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” So, repenting and believing on the Lord Jesus Christ are two sides of the same spiritual coin.

But keep this in mind. In God’s Word, people who are converted are people who have repented. That is, people who are converted, people who have been saved, are people who really have had a change of mind and heart about sin and have turned to Jesus Christ by faith. But that doesn’t much happen these days. These days folks don’t want Jesus instead of sin. They want Jesus and sin. But Jesus and sin isn’t what salvation is all about. Real conversion is Jesus instead of sin. And we all know that there are few who trade sin for Jesus. What most want is Jesus and sin. And what they really end up with is sin and no Jesus.

Third, conformity. God’s whole plan for the Christian is to conform the believer to the image of Christ. That’s what Romans 8.29 tells us. But how many so-called Christians in the world today have any semblance of Christ-likeness? How can anyone be described as Christ-like who isn’t interested in seeing lost souls saved, who isn’t offended and put off by sin, and who doesn’t have a passion for God and the things of God? Are you being conformed to the image of Christ when you stay home and refuse to attend Church when you are not sick? Are you being conformed to the image of Christ when you refuse to involve yourself in the organized ministries of the Church that Jesus died for? It is a work of God to conform the believer to the image of Christ. But when God is doing that work in a believer’s life, that believer is always working hard to serve God, working hard to learn God’s Word, working hard to see folks saved, working hard to be a good parent and a good spouse, working hard to express the Christian life he received when he trusted Jesus to save him by faith. You were created in Christ Jesus unto good works, Ephesians 2.10. But we sure don’t see much of that kind of Christianity in the world today. Do we? Your family should see that kind of Christianity in you.

Finally, carnality. Let us recognize that Christians can be carnal. Let us recognize that Christians can and do commit sins that can greatly harm the cause of Christ. But let us consider what carnality is and what carnality in the Christian life is not. First Corinthians 3.3:

“For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”

Carnality is the kind of immature and sinful behavior that a Christian can exhibit that looks too much like the behavior of an unsaved man to be pleasing to God. Remember some things about carnality that many people overlook: First, carnality is the kind of behavior exhibited by spiritually immature Christians, not mature Christians. Second, carnal behavior is conduct that is discarded by Christians when they are Scripturally confronted, rebuked, and corrected. The Corinthians were carnal, but they responded in dramatic fashion to Paul’s First Corinthian letter. The Galatians were carnal, but they responded to Paul’s letter to the Galatians. We even see the Apostle Peter seriously compromise the Gospel with his public conduct. Yet when the Apostle Paul confronted him about his wrongdoing, he publicly repented of his wrongdoing, Galatians 2.11-21 and Acts 15.7-12. But is that the kind of so-called carnality we see exhibited these days? These days we see people attend Church, supposedly turn to Christ, and are baptized, who then fall by the wayside for months, years, and even decades. Yet they claim that they are only backslidden, that they are carnal Christians. That simply is not possible. The Bible says “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin,” First John 3.9, “And he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

Not that Christians never do wrong. Christians sin. But the tense of the Greek verb for sin in First John 3.9 reveals that Christians do not sin in an ongoing and habitual manner. Christians cannot sin like unsaved people do in an ongoing and habitual manner. Do you realize what this means? It means that all these so-called Christians who claim to be saved but also say they have been carnal for months and years and decades ... are liars. They are liars because God says Christians cannot live like that.

There is a serious crisis in America. A larger percentage of Americans claim to be born again Christians now than at any other time in American history. Yet we have drunkenness, drug abuse, teen unmarried pregnancies, abortions being commonplace, drive-by shootings, armed robberies, rape, and child molesting. All of this in the midst of an overwhelmingly Christian population.

What’s going on? At the time of the American Revolution, we had the highest literacy our nation has ever known, genuine Holy Spirit revivals going on from time to time in different regions and locales, yet only 16 percent of the population attended Church and claimed to be Christians.

Our country has not improved morally in all these years, even though so many people now claim to be and probably really do think they are Christians. They know they aren’t spiritual Christians. But they do think they are carnal Christians.

They are not carnal Christians. They aren’t Christians at all. Why not? There was never any real Holy Ghost conviction. Or if there was, it was never allowed to run its course and properly prepare the sinner’s soul to really meet Christ by faith. Second, there is no real and genuine conversion. Folks today are not turning from sin to Jesus. They are seeking to add Jesus to their sin. But that doesn’t result in real salvation of the soul and forgiveness of sin. We have a nation of people who think they are saved, but who have never been deeply convicted and soundly converted.

How do they delude themselves into thinking they are saved? Simple. They think they are carnal Christians. They have a view of carnality that is completely foreign to Scripture. That error gives them a convenient explanation for a life that obviously does not line up with what the Bible says the Christian life should be like. Conformity to Christ-likeness, they think, is only for the super-spiritual.
