“FEAR NOT” 

This morning’s message from God’s Word has directly to do with all mankind confronting a threat to survival such as we have not seen for a century, setting aside two large scale and numerous small scale wars, and the intentional starvation of one hundred million people by the Soviet and Communist Chinese regimes.

My role in this present pandemic is very unusual for me. I am a pastor, yet I am prohibited to engage in the crucial close proximity aspect of pastoral ministry. You cannot visit my office. I cannot visit you. I cannot touch your hand. I cannot sit in your living room across the coffee table from you or in your kitchen across the kitchen table from you with an open Bible and look you in the eye.

The loss of those features of my ministry crushes me. Some people’s relationship with their pastor is relatively unaffected by the pandemic, but those are individuals whose choices never did make full use of a pastor. It’s each individual’s call, but those believers who most used their pastor’s ministry before most miss their pastor’s ministry during this crisis.

Just know that I miss you all terribly, and I struggle with the restrictions placed upon us by those who seem very eager to disregard our constitutionally guaranteed liberties. But I rest comfortably in God’s power, sovereignty, and wisdom. With that said, my stated purpose in this message is to comfort you with a sermon that I have titled “Fear Not.”

The origin of this sermon is a statement found in Dennis Prager’s “The Rational Bible - Genesis,” given to me by our missionary in Ukraine. It seems the sentence repeated by God more than any other in the Hebrew Scriptures is “Fear not.”[1] I discovered the phrase appears in sixty-two verses in the English Bible, forty-nine times in the Old Testament, and thirteen times in the New Testament. Sixteen times the LORD God utters this admonition.[2] The angel Gabriel makes this statement five times. The Lord Jesus Christ uttered these words six times. Moses, Joshua, Joseph, Samuel, David, Elijah, and Elisha, and several of the writing prophets also uttered these words. When I post this message on the Church’s web site, I will include the sixty-two verses in which “Fear not” is found at the end for your consideration.

The ministry of comfort, as it is found in the Bible, takes in the comprehensive meanings of two Greek words, parakalá½³w and paraklá½µsiV. Parakalá½³w is a verb, and paraklá½µsiV is a noun. The idea includes calling someone to your side and to encourage or exhort you.[3]

I cannot come to your side. And my effort to comfort you this morning does not include that part of comfort having to do with making you feel good. Reflect on John chapters 13-16 and the Lord’s words to His remaining apostles after the departure of Judas Iscariot. Observe, and you will see the Lord’s discourses were less designed to make His men feel good than they were designed to prepare His men for what they were about to face.

My aim is the same. This message is not designed to make anyone feel good. Instead, its design is to prepare you for what we are told will come. And it is in the face of what is predicted to come that I bring to your attention God’s words, the Savior’s words, and the words of prophets and angels, to “Fear not.”

Beloved, what is coming our way is predicted to be fearsome, unlike anything we have seen in our lifetimes. If you are not ready to address such a grave matter, this message is not for you. This is not a feel better message; it is a prepare for what’s coming message.

If you have watched the president’s daily briefings at all, unfiltered, and without being explained away by many mainstream media sources, you are aware that the CCP Virus may result in 200,000 fatalities in the United States. However, that is the prediction over a definite time. You have also noticed that the strategy is stated to be what is called “flatten the curve,” which is to say slow down the rate at which people contract the disease caused by the CCP Virus.

What may not have registered in your mind is that, since this is an entirely new virus to our race, no member of the human family has an immunity to it. Immunities must be built up over time from repeated exposures to a virus or bacteria. But we are facing this for the first time, suggesting that eventually (and some experts have predicted this) almost everyone will become infected by this virus.

Whether you are infected is not at issue. What is at issue is when you will be infected and how effectively your body’s immune system will be able to cope with the infection when you contract the disease. It is when the realization that you will almost certainly contract this disease registers with you that you will need words of comfort. And remember what I am referring to by comfort. I refer not, at this time, to making you feel better by saying, “There, there. It will be okay.” I refer to ministering God’s Word to you so that you can prepare.

Are you of advanced age? Are you an asthmatic? Are you a diabetic? Do you have high blood pressure? The medical experts tell us that the particular mechanism by which the human body is attacked by this virus is especially hard on these categories of people, with the threat escalating for those who are older, and asthmatic, and diabetic, with high blood pressure.

To prepare for the worst, let me set before you three considerations for reflection, introspection, and action: 

First, CONSIDER WHAT IS FEARED

Then scroll to the end of the sermon, where you will see the sixty-two verses in which the phrase “Fear not” is found. Here is what you will find, though please do not take my word for it. Discover this yourself:

First, (and this is not in any order of importance or frequency), you will find the directive to “Fear not” addressed to those who fear men. Though fear of men is not the greatest concern most people have during this pandemic, in the until now, typically comfortable and secure environment of the United States, this has been the fear that has affected most of you. You might call it concern, but it’s fear. You are scared to say or do what is right and proper and good because of consideration of some other person’s reaction.

I know grown men who have heard the Gospel preached, but who have shied away from seriously considering the claims of Christ for fear of what their aged mother would say or do. Others are afraid of what a boyfriend might say or do. Still others have gone to their grave a Hell-bound sinner for fear of the reaction of a husband or wife. Notice, as you read those verses I have arranged for you, how many times individuals are told to “Fear not” who were frightened of other people. I know guys who joined the military and risked their lives in war because they were less afraid of dying than they were afraid of the reactions of people they knew.

Next, you will find the directive to “Fear not” addressed to those who fear the unknown. This, obviously, is at the forefront during the CCP Virus pandemic. You do not know if you will get sick if you will lose your job if you will be evicted from your home if you will lose a spouse or a child, if you will be financially ruined, or if you will die. Don’t get me wrong. Each of these is a very serious concern that must be addressed, must be considered, and must be thought through. But each is a circumstance entirely beyond your control. Austere measures may delay you being infected, but you will eventually be infected.

Are you older? Have you lived to a ripe old age? Your house should be in order. What about health factors such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney disease? Are you ready to address this disease in light of these increased risk factors? And what about your children? I know people who have children who are seriously asthmatic. Still others have children with Type I diabetes.

Parents ought to be especially concerned for their children, but not just their children’s health issues. What about your child’s spiritual condition? What kind of mom or dad could live with the possible loss of a child to this pandemic who had actually stood in the way of that child hearing the Gospel, never once encouraging that child to consider the claims of Christ, and therefore spending the rest of your life wondering about the eternal destiny of your son or daughter? I am glad I will never have to live with that.

Among those verses I suggest you read are situations in which someone is facing unknown circumstances and is directed to “Fear not.” It is not that you are afraid of another person. It is that you and your loved ones are facing the unknown, and the unknown peril is taking people’s lives in every country of the world. Do you know it won’t be you? Do you know it won’t be your spouse? Do you know it won’t be your mom or dad? Do you know it won’t be your baby girl or young son? No, you don’t know. That’s why, when you finally face up to reality, you will be scared. 

Then, CONSIDER WHAT IS NOT FEARED 

I know people who give themselves a false comfort and a counterfeit sense of assurance by saying lots of Jesus words and tossing around Christian lingo. But that is of no use. Remember what the Savior said in Matthew 7.22-23: 

22    Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23    And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 

You might even be thinking right now, “You’re just trying to scare me.” No, what I am trying to do is prepare you. You can stand between two rails for as long as you want and deny that the train is coming, but eventually, it will be here, and you are standing in the wrong place. If you were to close your mouth so that no one could hear you talk, you couldn’t use Jesus words or Christian lingo, but observers could only take note of your life and lifestyle, both publicly and privately, would they think you are spiritually prepared for what’s coming? 

Hebrews 10.25:

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” 

“As the manner of some is.” Does your involvement with the public worship of God with other Christians exclude you from this group of unsaved individuals the writer to Hebrews described as “some,” who are not prepared for the approaching “day”? 

First Corinthians 6.9-10:    

9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 

Do you find yourself described anywhere in these two verses? Paul’s intention being to show the Corinthian congregation that those who professed Christ but who lived like this were not truly converted. Twice he points out that they “shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Some say, “But I’m convinced.” It’s not you who needs to be convinced, but God. It’s not you who needs to be convinced, but Christ.

What you will find when you read the verses I have listed for you is a significant characteristic found of those to whom God says “Fear not,” to whom a prophet says “Fear not,” to whom the Savior says “Fear not,” and to whom an angel says “Fear not.” Be he or she an individual, or be they a group of people, in every instance the words “Fear not” are uttered to someone or some group who has an established relationship with God, by covenant or by faith. Understand that every human being who has ever lived has two directions in which relationships can be established, with evidence of those relationships being unconsciously put on display.

There can be a vertical relationship with God, and there most certainly are horizontal relationships with other human beings. The most important of these directional relationships, as shown by reason, and as shown by the sequence of commandments given by God to Moses in the Ten Commandments, is one’s vertical relationship with God before one’s horizontal relationships with anyone else. Keep also in mind that your relationship with yourself is not a vertical relationship, so that you set yourself up in your value system as god, but is a horizontal relationship so that you and your interests are always to be secondary to God and His interests. Evidence of this is visible to the discerning. This is illustrated by several verses in God’s Word: 

Psalm 111.10: 

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” 

Proverbs 1.7:  

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” 

Proverbs 9.10:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” 

In other words, no individual really and truly possesses decision-making skills (wisdom) or a grasp of reality (knowledge) who does not first fear, reverence, stand in awe, and have great admiration for God. At least not that will benefit his preparation for eternity. And as the Lord Jesus asked, in Mark 8.36: 

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” 

Genesis 18.25:

“Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” 

These were the words of Abraham before God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. These are words a firstborn son remembers when God takes his unsaved mother. These are the words a father remembers when his little girl gets sick and dies. A person possesses only so much fear. If you fear God you will not fear man. If you fear God you will not fear circumstances, either known or unknown. As the Savior said in Matthew 10.28: 

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” 

Are you afraid of the virus?

Are you afraid that it will kill you?

Are you afraid it will kill your spouse or your child?

I am not suggesting that you behave irresponsibly since life is sacred and ought to be treated as valuable. Neither do I suggest you should not be concerned. But are you afraid?

Are you scared? 

Finally, CONSIDER WHAT YOU NEED 

It may be that you need a reminder from God. After Abram rescued his kidnapped nephew, Lot, and feared retaliation for what he had done, 

“the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram.” 

This was a reminder from God, who had already made promises to bless him in the form of the Abrahamic Covenant. It is not unusual for God’s people to become frightened by a circumstance, or to be overwhelmed by a tragedy. But in such cases, what is needed is a reminder from God, or from God’s Word, or from God’s Spirit, of a relationship that already exists and ought to be a comfort to the soul. Such is the case with what we are facing with this pandemic, if you know Jesus Christ as your Savior, if God is your heavenly Father, and your indwelling Spirit is the seal of your inheritance. Your relationship with God may not spare you a single tragedy, nor spare you one heartache or loved one lost. You may lose your spouse, a child, your home, your job, your credit rating, or your own health. But these things are all in this world, beloved. What we have in Christ is so much more. As Paul wrote in Romans 8.18: 

“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” 

And in Romans 8.38-39: 

38    For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39    Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 

If you have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, be reminded by that relationship that all is well with your soul.

It may, on the other hand, be that you need a relationship with God. Do you understand that we live in perilous times? Are you aware that none of us has a guarantee of longevity? I had a cousin die when she was seven years old. I had an uncle die in his early forties from a heart attack, though he had survived combat in the South Pacific.

Are you prepared for eternity? If your thoughts turn immediately to what some person might think about your consideration of your soul’s safety, then you fear someone other than God. What would you do if God was your only consideration, never minding anyone else’s opinion? I can tell you because I know. You would consider the claims of Jesus Christ and consider your soul’s preparation for eternity. Jesus Christ died on Calvary’s cross for other’s sins. Since you are a sinner, and since your sins bar your entrance to God’s heaven, you need the forgiveness only Jesus Christ provides, but only to those who turn from their sins to Him for salvation.

“Well, I think I am already saved.” Think? You are persuaded such an important matter as this is settled by “I think”? Here’s what I think. I think you are wrong. I think your testimony needs to be carefully examined. I think your soul’s condition and the length of eternity demands that you exercise an abundance of caution for your soul’s safety.

Set aside any consideration of someone else’s negative reaction. Set aside any pride that might interfere with the discovery of a false hope. This matter of the forgiveness of sins is the reason God has allowed you to live this long, so you might prepare for eternity. 

Everyone fears. There is no individual who does not fear. However, other than momentary frights and surprises that serve to protect you from dangerous situations, God does not want you to live in fear. His provision makes it possible for you to live in relative peace and tranquility in the most adverse circumstances. But such is possible only if you have a relationship with God as a result of considering the claims of Jesus Christ, who died for sins and rose from the dead, to save sinners, and trusting Him. If you know Jesus Christ you have a relationship with God, and He speaks words of comfort to you. “Fear not.”

How is it the child of God can “Fear not”? The child of God fears not because we trust God and His Son, who does all things well, and who govern the affairs of men. Beloved, as bad as this pandemic is predicted to be, God’s Word reveals to us that He’s got this.

Why was David not afraid in the valley of the shadow of death when he faced Goliath? Why was Daniel not troubled in the lions’ den? Why were the three Hebrews not afraid of the fiery furnace? Why did Paul and Silas break out in a song in the Philippian jail after being beaten half to death? Because they had confidence in God’s ability to guard and protect the safety of their souls.

In the face of danger, what could be more clear to you than your need of the forgiveness of your sins? Therefore, I urge you to trust Christ now. And if you are uncertain and distressed, reach out to me.

Gen 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

Ge 21:17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.

Ge 26:24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.

Ge 35:17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.

Ge 43:23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.

Ge 46:3 And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:

Ge 50:19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

Ps 64:4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.

Isa 7:4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.

Isa 35:4 Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.

Isa 41:13 For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

Isa 43:5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;

Isa 54:4 Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more.

Jer 40:9 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

Jer 46:27 But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

La 3:57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.

Da 10:12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.
